From Basement Startup to Regional Power Leader

Firefly Power Solutions began as Greenville Saw Service Inc., a small chainsaw sales and repair business founded in 1974 by John Bensen in the basement of his home in Greenville, NY. Over the years, John expanded into agricultural equipment and ultimately pioneered the local market for automatic standby generators—long before they became mainstream.
From hand-converting gas engine generators to run on propane, to designing custom transfer systems, the company played a foundational role in shaping the backup power industry in the Catskills and Capital Region. With each expansion—from a new shop in 1982 to an 8,000 sq. ft. facility in 1991—Greenville Saw grew into a trusted name in both the Kubota and Generac dealer networks.
A New Generation, A Renewed Mission
In 2011, John’s son Allastair “AJ” Bensen officially joined the company, becoming a certified Generac technician and eventually taking over as general manager. Over the next decade, AJ worked across every role in the business, helping guide it to Elite Dealer status with both Kubota and Generac.
In 2022, AJ led the strategic sale of the Kubota dealership while securing his parents’ retirement. That same year, he rebranded the company as Firefly Power Solutions, focusing exclusively on standby generator services and expanding its reach across Upstate New York.
About AJ Bensen
AJ was born and raised in Greenville, NY, where he grew up as an active Boy Scout and volunteer firefighter, shaping his deep commitment to community. A graduate of Greenville Central High School and later UAlbany, AJ holds a BA in Economics and has been a resident of Delmar since 2011, where he lives with his wife and two children.
He’s also a dedicated real estate investor and property owner in Delmar and Albany, and has served the region through community advocacy and public service, including his candidacy for the Bethlehem Town Board. His life and work reflect a deep-rooted commitment to family, local business, and building stronger, more resilient communities.
